nlapiGetCurrentLineItemValue(type, fldnam, linenum) - why linenum?

From the help the method nlapiGetCurrentLineItemValue(type, fldnam, linenum) needs a linenum.  That makes no sense.

Looking at the source of that method it appears it will default to "" in the event no line is specified.  Either way... I'm confused, why is the parameter there at all?
