Cannot set Ship Cost thru scripting

We have implemented a SuiteScript on the sales order form to get the shipping cost from UPS in real time (with support for negotiated rates).

This script is implemented as a client side script so that the user can see the shipping cost prior to saving the order. However, the Shipping Cost field cannot be set through a client script; it can only be set through a server side script.

Is this a know limitation? Is there a specific reason for this?
