Creating Fax Message record

I am researching sending faxes using a 3rd party, non-integrated fax provider (this morning efax is averaging 73 minutes to deliver a fax!)

If I can create a message and sets it type to fax then I should be able to accomplish what I'm after.  Looking at the documentation I don't see that type is a supported field.

Has anyone managed to create a FAX message, set the recipient to a number and successfully attach to a record?
