Email Case Capture and beforeSubmit

I'm trying to implement a User Event script that adjusts field values based on the inbound subject and/or email address of the person that submits the case.

I have a finite set of field reps and will be able to normalize the inbound email subject line so I can reliably look for certain values.

Autoreply templates are in use for case creation though I'm not sure that matters.

What I'm struggling with is whether or not a beforeSubmit script will even work with email case capture.  I have a very simple starter script I'm trying to use as a proof of concept so I can build off it later, but it does nothing.  Any help appreciated.  (my account number removed from the email addy and replaced with 'xxxxxx')
