Change Custom Field On Save of PO

Can anyone help me script this please. I want it so when i save a PO it will update a custom field on the item level with the deliver by date on the PO. This custom field is not on the PO itself, only on the item record itself. Will i have to put the custom field into the item columns on the PO to do this?
