Detecting when a SO is waiting for Approval

I want to send en email when a sales rep has transformed an estimate to a Sales order (SO).  When they save the new SO, I want to add a client side script to send the email but I can't see how to read the status of "Pending Approval" - can someone enlighten me pls?
