subtotal field on invoices not working as before

i used (pre 2009.1) to be able to access the subtotal field on invoices at the pageInit stage - now i can't: it seems to be null until after the pageInit script has finished

subtotal also doesn't seem to trigger a fieldChanged event when it's finally been given a value

yang, any clues what's happened or how to get round this?
