Replace Carriage Return in Text Area

It has been a long day of coding and this has had me stumped for over 3 hours.

I have created a text area field.  I want to replace carrage returns that the user inputs with commas.

I have tried all variations of posts but cant seem to identify the correct character

I have tried

.replace("",","))
.replace(/^w+s*w*/,",")

Can anyone help?
