Getting text value of list

Hi there,
I'm trying to implement some quick javascript to pass some data from netsuite to our webservice, all is fine apart from one field where I need to get the text from a drop-down menu rather than the id.

nlapiGetFieldValue('field') works fine for returning the id of the selection, and according to the documentation I thought nlapiGetFieldText('field') should return the text, but it just returns a blank value...

Any pointers in the right direction appreciated.
