enable disable field

Hi everyone,

I'm really hoping someone can help me with some really basic Suitescript.

I'm wanting to enable and disable fields programtically.

In the reference sheet i found

nlobjField.setMandatory = function( mandatory ) { ; }                  /* {void} make this field mandatory. */

Its been quite some time since I have written any javascript so I cam extremely rusty....

I have tried using

nlapiGetField('customField2000').setMandatory() ;

however this doesnt work.... Any help is greatly appreciated.
