Item field "modified"

I was hoping to depend on the item record field "modified" to indicate the last modified date.  Strangely, it seems this date only changes if you modify a built-in field, i.e. nothing that starts with "custitem_".  Bug or not, is it readily and easily possible to toss a SuiteScript into our custom form to make the "modified" field behave as I expected?
