How to query in custom script

Hello,

I need to query the net suite database inside of a custom tab in an edit customer record page.

Basically, I have a textbox that should only allow numbers that are not already associated with another account.

I have done some basic javascript page editing, but I have never needed to access data.

Any ideas where to start?
