Drop Down lists... is it possible

Is it possible to use a client side script to set the default value of a drop-down list?

I know this was an issue at some point, but I don't know if it has been fixed or not.

What I am trying to accomplish...

Basically when a user opens a customer record, the script will check to see if the price level field is blank, if it is blank, then set the value of the price level field to a default level.
