Portlet Instance's identifier

I want to implement auto-refresh in one of our custom portlets. I see the "Refresh" link calls a JavaScript function called "refreshPortlet". Is there any documentation on how to use this function?

Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, one of the inputs to that function appears to be that portlet instance's identifier of the form "servecontent" followed sometimes by "neg" and then some identifier. Is there a way get this identifier?
