Custom Scripted Portlet

We need to have a dashboard portlet created. The requirement is basically to have a bar graph created that reports two different elements of case data for each period. (for example for a particular period, want to display cases that are case type A vs cases that are case type B. ) My understanding that we cannot do this with a standard portlet.

Just wanted some advice to verify that this would have to be a custom portlet script.
