Override Tax Calculation

Is there any way to override the tax calculation on a transaction?  I've tried updating taxtotal on the transaction as well as taxableamt on the item sublist but neither alters the tax on the transaction.  Through the UI (client event script) an unexpected error is thrown and in the debugger no error is generated but the changes aren't committed to the record.
