Odd help desk checkbox behavior

I wrote a script to set some default values on new cases. When the script runs, the Help Desk checkbox gets checked when the "new case" page loads, but it unchecks itself as soon as the company name gets set by the script.

Does anyone know why this happens, and what to do about it?
