Populate a Transaction Column Field

I need to populate a Transaction Column Field (custcolpopupalerts) based upon text contained in the item description when a item is added to a Sales Order.

Example:
Item Desc. contains the phrase "custom finish" and that will trigger PopUp Alert "01" to be selected in field "custcolpopupalerts".

Thanks in advance if anyone has a script for this.
