Can i disable or inline the builtin rate column field in line items in a transaction?

Hi All,
In any transaction such as a salesorder we enter line items, in those line items we have rate field .Can i have a chance to disable it/inline it with help of scripting.
As it is a standard field i cant do it by normal customization.

So, please give any idea.
