script help - restrict changes to opportunity status when criteria isn't met

How do you restrict changes applied to the Status field of an Opportunity record when a certain criteria is not met, for instance, when certain checkboxes are not checked in the opportunity form.

I want to use this as a means to keep sales rep adhering to the stated sales process.
