Not able to call nlapiInsertSelectOption on UI Assistant Select fields

I have a UI Assistant that is adding two select fields.  On the client side I have a script that is setting the select options on the second field based on selection in the first.  Basic, simple.

I have been getting an error and after 3 hours of bug chasing and snooping around in firebug I found that the error I'm getting is coming from deep within the NetSuite DOM functions.


An unexpected error occurred in a script running on this page.

JS_EXCEPTION
TypeError sel.add is not a function



Now before I go through support and spend days on this, does anyone know if what I'm trying to do should NOT be possible?  I mean... are UI Assistant fields special?  Do some of the client methods NOT work on them?
