Suitelet Form Display help!

Hi, I have a suitelet that has been running for about 2 years now that is of type 'form'.  Is there a way to hide and unhide certain fields based on the user checking a 'checkbox'?

For example I have a form requesting more information.  If the user clicks the check box, more fields are displayed.

I've tried hiding these fields on the form then with the Client side code check box event occurs to nlapiGetField(xxx)  and set the display type from hidden to normal but that doesn't work.  The user's guide explicitly says the nlapiGetField obj is read only so no methods can be run on it.
