UI Assistants - can we control field layout?

I'm trying to create an assistant and having a frustrating time laying out the UI the way I want.  I have a couple questions I'm hoping someone in the know can answer real quick:

(F**K this forum software!  The "bullet list" button just deleted ALL my items!!!!)

- Can we layout field groups side by side (i.e. multiple groups per row)?
- Can we layout fields in a multi column layout or are they always stuck smack dab in the middle?
- Does setLayoutType() have any effect at all on fields added to an assistant?

In the following screenshot, I'd like to move the single non-grouped field under the group:
