getting/setting custom radio button values (client side)

After about 45 minutes of experimenting trying to set the value of a radio button field on the client side I contacted support and they are saying it's not yet supported.  Can  anyone else confirm this?  I'm finding it just too hard to believe that they would unsupported on the client side.
