Use of nlapiGetContext().setSessionObject() in a Suitelet

I have a suitelet which requires login that I pass data to from an NS site builder website. I can use nlapiGetContext() to get teh customer id but when I try to save to the session using...

var ctx.nlapiGetContext();
ctx.setSessionObject('sessionName', 'sessionValue');

...I get an unexpected error.

I searched on here and saw this post so it looks like it should be possible. Anyone know anything about this?
