nlapiSearchRecord not returning expected item record

Hello all,
We have a restlet that has a nlapiSearchRecord that is supposed to return a item id (internal id) based on the name.  Instead of returning the item id for that item it is returning the item id for another item that has that name as one of the vendor codes.  I am thoroughly confused by this.

How do we use nlapiSearchRecord to get the internal id of an item when we have the item name?
