Customize Relationships

I would like to be able to breakdown partners into catagories like customers.  Where we have statuses of leads, prospects, and then custmers where we can track the progress. 

I need the same ability for partners to track, the stages from lead, to prospect to partner.

Does anyone have an idea how to do this?

I would also like to do this with Software companies We work in the medical field and would like to track Patient Management systems who we are forming relationships with to track the progress in the same manner.
