Merge Custom Record Fields with nlapiMergeEmail

I would like to be able to take fields from a Custom Record and merge them with other fields on an Entity to put into an email template.
Does anyone have experience with this, or know if its possible?
From my initial attempts, it appears as if Custom Records are not supported by the Email Merge Template functionality. I hope this isn't the case and there is a way around this via scripts.
Basically, I'm trying to get this command to work:
var theMessageBody = nlapiMergeEmail(38, 'customer', endCustomerID, 'customrecord2', licID);
38 = the Merge Template.
I put in a field based on the typical format <NLCUSTRECORD_LICENSE_KEY> that I hope will get merged. I suspect this is the part that is failing and my fear is custom record fields are not available.
