Formula Results Not showing in record

I have imbedded a formula within a custom record created for my customer forms. The problem is that the results do not show on the customer form. It seems that if you do not store the value it does not show in the record. If you do store the value the record will not calculate the formula. Has anyone had experience with this and have a fix or work around. I really need this information to show on the customer form. Thanks in advance.
