How to share custom records

Hello,

When creating a custom record, is there an easy way to say that all roles can view the record, but then restrict editing to specific roles? The only way I see is to go through role by role and define permissions, I would like to give the blanket view without messing with each and every role.

Maybe I'm missing something obvious.
