Customize Email Alert on Custom Records...?

Hi,

Maybe I am just stuck with something strange/silly.

I have customized some email alerts on standard records and they work fine, however when I try to do the same on custom records I am getting:

E-mail Alert Failure using saved search 'Custom (mycustrecord) Search'. Reason: An unexpected error has occurred.

I have been trying over a few days and not getting past this, do other people have this as working?

NOTE: this is when I "save and email" to test it.
Also I have 2 text fields on this record ( _notes & _details) and when they come through on the alert email they display as "Notes : [EMAIL="oracle.sql.CLOB@f33510"]oracle.sql.CLOB@f33510[/EMAIL] & Details: oracle.sql.CLOB@eb68f1" rather than the text I entered "Notes: this is a test note" & "Details : this is a test detail". I will get some screenshots to help my confusing writing!
