Custom record with many-to-many relationship

I created a custom record, "Funding Source", and I need to have a many-to-many relationship between this record and the Contact record.  I need exactly the same relationship that exists between customers and contacts, i.e., customer can have many contacts and contacts can be associated with many customers (companies).  I added the Contact as a field on the Funding Source record and selected "record is parent".  However, I can only associate a Funding Source with one contact.  If I attach a Funding Source to one contact and then try to attach it to another, it is removed from the first.
