Default Permissions on Custom Record Access?

Hello,

I have a custom record that I need to query from a client side script. I'd like all users to be able to query the record but only certain users to be able to create/edit these records.

Does anyone have a solution for this? Having to assign each role to the record doesn't seem like a great solution.
