"Record is Parent" field not available when List/Record selected

I'm trying to create a child custom record and I've run into some issues - when I created a custom field and choose List/Record as the field type, the "Record is Parent" checkbox does not become available to check right away.  I have to save the field first, and then go back in and the field can be checked.  However, this doesn't seem to trigger the parent/child relationship because the custom record does not appear on the parent record.  Has anyone else run into this?  Any ideas how to fix this?  I have been searching through help and the user
