Calculations inside fields

Is there a way to program my item fields so I can have several numbers in there, then show the total in the record display?

For example, I have a field where I want to list several expenses, then have them all added: +2+3+8+1+6=20

If I could set up a chart, similar to the way the Pricing subtab looks, except with my own formulas, that would be even better...
