Greater than or less than in Formula Field?

I want to create a formula field that compares two custom field amounts and shows the lesser value of the two. So if amount1 is less than amount2 the field shows amount1.

Does anyone know if there is a way to use less than or greater than in a SQL expression? I can't seem to find one.
