Filtering contacts...

Is there a way to filter the list of contacts that the user chooses from when adding a new contact to a (sub)project? I would like to be able to narrow down the list to certain groups of contacts since we have hundreds of contacts to select from. Could I group certain contacts using the grouping functionality in the system or even using a custom record?
