The IF function in custom fields

I'm trying to use the basic IF function in a formula for the a custom transaction column field but can't get the syntax right.  Can someone help?

I am trying to do field a divided by field b but sometimes field b is sometimes zero.  Therefore, to avoid a ERROR: Invalid Expression result when the field is zero i want to use an if function to return zero.  I have also tried the nvl function but still got an ERROR.
