Custom Field with Count Formula?

Is it possible to use a custom field's formula option (under validation/defaulting) to display a count of a related records?

I'm looking to use this on a custom record, however a simple example might be:  Display the number of contacts associated with a customer.

To test, I tried simply using count(*).  The syntax seems to be recognized returning 1 for the current record.  (The field is integer, store value = false)
