Formula Field in a Column of a PDF Layout?

Is it possible to add a formula field to the columns section of a PDF layout? If it was just a body field, I could probably use a PDF layout custom element. I tried adding a custom column field to my sales order form with formula selected and store value unselected. However, NetSuite was getting all squirrelly on me so I couldn't tell if I was wasting my time or if I just needed to be more persistent. Am I headed down the right track, a dead end, or is there a better way for me to approach this?
