Validating a field using SQL function

Hello Everybody,

I need to validate a field on a form to calculate the total sum of exam scores for a particular based on the records inputed into the form.
I've gone through the SQL functions and i wasn't able to find the sum or average funtion.Does anyone have a suggestion on anyother function to use to achieve this task?
