Inline HTML field, possible to retunr the internal id?

I have a link that opens up a new case form from the inventory numbers form. The problem is that the {custitemnumber_xx} fields on the form all return the text from the field in the URL, and not the internal id's, which would be really handy to pre-populate the case form and reduce any potential data entry errors.

Is there any way to acheive that?
