Change field type....

I have a custom field which I defined as a list.  However on import, I was not able to pre-populate the list, so I changed the field type to free form and all was well.

Now that I am live, I need to change that field type back to list and make it required.  However as noted in previous post, I get a warning that if I make this change, I will lose my data.

So, I created a new list field and tried to source it from the free-form field and it won't let me do this. 

Has anyone ran into this?  Any suggestions?
