Can't view Lot number field on main tab

I am trying to customize a lot-numbered inventory item form and wanted to put the lot number information on the main tab.  I have assigned the field to the main tab, but it doesn't show up.  I have tested in numerous ways that the fields I check or uncheck change on the main tab, but the lot number field still remain invisible.

Is there some type of rule that the lot number field must stay on the inventory tab ?
