Displaying a field from another record using a formula

Is there a way to dynamically display the a field from a referenced record using a formula field?

Business case:  We want to show the tax rate on the Customer record, Financial tab, for the tax item that is referenced.  We can see the item, now we just want to show the rate.

I tried creating a custom field and insert {taxitem.rate} in the field, but it didn't display anything when I viewed the record.

Any ideas?
