Images in PDF/HTML Transaction Layouts?

I require the ability to insert a couple of images within our custom HTML/PDF transaction layouts, e.g. for an invoice or quote.

From what I can see on how to do this you would set a field in the 'Printing/Email' subtab and then use that in the custom layouts. Although there is no type for an image. All we require is to insert a couple of small images at the bottom of our invoices/quotes.

I asked NS cust. service and the reply was that this doesn't exist yet and is Enhancement #148335... Surely though there must be a way around this to achieve images in custom PDF/HTML transaction layouts... after all it is a pretty standard business requirement.
