translations for custom field data?

Can the data in a custom field carry translations, as well?

I want to have an custom field on certain items that contains HTML that will be included in the item's page on the web store.  So I want to be able to provide translations for that HTML, as well.

Can the single field have multiple translations?

Or do I need to create multiple fields, one for each language?
