Unable to select role for individual partner contacts

I am trying to create a dynamic group based upon the role of our partner contacts.

We have a number of individual subpartners for each of our partners and "Show individuals as Contacts" is enabled, but while the individuals are shown in a list of all contacts, they are not listed as a contact on the associated partner record.

Because the partners are not listed as a contact on the partner record, I can not select a role or update primary for that individual.

The only options I have come up with are:

1. Create both a contact and individual subpartner for each parent.
