Setting custom date field (formula) based on another custom field (text)

Full disclosure - I am not a programmer, but before I go to NS Support I wanted to see if anyone knew the answer offhand -

I have a new custom entity 'date' field that right now is just hard text entry.  I want to set that field to automatically populate a date that is 3 days before ANOTHER custom date field that is already populated...so for example, our ops team enters a due date, and when they do that I want another field to populate with a date that is three days before that without them having to go back in and enter it.
