Custom Item Number Fields - Sourcing

I have a custom item number field on my serial records that I use to track the # hours on a given machine. I've tried to move my maint reporting into Netsuite, so I have a custom record created where I enter the item, then serial # and what I'd like to do is pull the hours from that serial #. When I create my custom field, however, I have no option to source custom fields on the serial record.
